Small decline in number of first asylum applications

​In the month of February 2017, the number of first asylum applications decreased slightly compared to the previous month (from 1,245 in January to 1,162 in February).

​The influx has as a whole increased (3,425 in February, 2,699 in January). This is due largely to the number of persons who came here in the context of family reunification.

First asylum applications
The top three nationalities of persons who submitted a first asylum  application  in February is formed by Syrians, Algerians and Eritreans.  34% of the total influx of asylum seekers ((first asylum applications, repeated asylum applications and family members of asylum status holders) in February is formed by first asylum applications.

Repeated requests for asylum
The number of repeated applications in February 2017 decreased slightly compared to the previous month (162 in February, 178 in January). Repeated requests for asylum are a small 5% of the total influx of asylum seekers in February.  More than one third (38%) of the persons who submitted a repeated application for asylum were Afghans, followed at a distance by Iranians, Iraqis, Nigerians and Eritreans.

Family reunification
Family members of asylum status holders may be eligible for a residence permit under certain conditions. January 2017 showed a decrease in the number of persons who came here in the context of family reunification. There were no indications that the downfall would continue in the longer term. In February, the number of family members of asylum status holders which entered the Netherlands rose again as expected (in February 2,101, January 1,276) .This increase mainly accounted for persons with Syrian nationality (75%). In all 61% of the total influx of asylum seekers in February was formed by persons who came here in the context of family reunification. of Family members traveling.
