Glossary - I

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
The IND decides whether a foreign national can come to the Netherlands and whether he can become a Dutch national if he so wishes. The IND has the following responsibilities, which it carries out in conjunction with the police and the Royal Netherlands Military Constabulary:
- border control
- checking whether foreign nationals are staying in the Netherlands legally
- ensuring that foreign nationals who must leave the Netherlands do in fact leave the country
International Organisation for Migration (IOM)
The key activity of the IOM is the transportation and resettlement of migrants all over the world. The organisation has a world-wide network. The IOM assists people who wish to return to their own country or who wish to migrate on to a third country. The IOM also provides support in family reunification. The IOM provides financial support upon departure from the Netherlands, subject to certain conditions.
Invitation letter
The person with whom a foreign national will be staying in the Netherlands on the basis of a tourist visa will obtain this form from his municipality and complete it. He must also bring his passport or identity card so that his signature on the invitation letter can be verified. The foreign national can subsequently use this letter to support his visa application.
