Extension

Is your Dutch residence permit due to expire?

If your Dutch residence permit is due to expire, you can apply to extend the period of validity of your residence permit. In principal, you will need to meet the same conditions for the extension as you did when you applied for your original residence permit. In addition, you must be able to prove that you (now) have sufficient health insurance (see the list of terms). The period your residence permit will be extended for will depend on your situation.

Check your document to see when your permit expires.

The IND will assess whether you are eligible for an extension of your residence permit. A residence permit is usually extended for 1 year each time. A residence permit for the purpose of, among others, work as an au pair, work experience, practical experience or a family visit cannot be extended.

In some cases, the period of validity of the residence permit may be extended by five years.

  • After one year of lawful residence on the basis of a marriage, registered partnership or a relationship, provided that the right of residence is of a non-temporary nature.
  • After five years of uninterrupted lawful residence on the basis of a regular residence permit for a non-temporary purpose of residence.

You must apply for an extension in good time, approximately 3 months before the expiry date of your current residence permit. The IND will normally send you notification in good time that the period of validity of your residence permit is due to expire and will explain how to extend the period of validity of your residence permit.

Costs

Please note! Rates for applications for extension in the context of family reunification
Different fee rates apply to applications for extension of residence permits in the context of family reunification. A special family rate of € 52 applies to applications for extension for (extended) family reunification with one or both parents. The standard fee rate of € 288 applies to applications for extension for staying with a husband or wife or (registered) partner.

Depending on your situation and your purpose of residence you may be eligible for:

  • a residence permit for continued residence, which gives you independent right of residence
  • you will not usually be eligible for a permanent residence permit until you have resided legally in the Netherlands for an uninterrupted period of 5 years.
  • if you have a minor child or are the legal representative of a child, you must apply for an extension on behalf of the child. If the child is aged 12 or over he or she must sign the form him or herself. If the child is under 12, no antecedents declaration needs to be completed.
