You are a citizen of the European Union
You are a citizens of the European Union and wish to move to the Netherlands. You are not obliged to report to the Aliens Police when you arrive in the Netherlands. To be able to lawfully stay in the Netherlands as a citizen of the European Union, you require at least the following:
Residence document: proof of lawful stay
As a citizen of the European Union you do not need a residence permit to stay in the Netherlands if you are staying on the basis of the EC Treaty (Treaty establishing the European Community). The following purposes of residence are regarded residence based on the EC Treaty:
You are obliged to apply for a regular residence permit for all other purposes of residence.
Registration is not compulsory, but may be handy
If you do not need a residence document, it may be handy to have a registration certificate. Some institutions (including the Tax and Customs Administration and banks) may ask for it. You can use it for instance to open a bank account in the Netherlands. You may apply for a registration certificate at the IND desk. For more information, see 'procedure'.
